27 OCTOBER 2014 – Lovemore Meya — Fifty-six Ethiopians who allegedly entered Zimbabwe illegally through Nyamapanda Border Post appeared in court on Thursday charged with unlawful entry and illegally staying in Zimbabwe. Belachaw Abyo (28) and 55 others whose ages vary from 15 to 28 were not asked to plead to contravening section 29 (1) of the Immigration Act Chapter 4.2. They appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo, who remanded them in custody to today, but they will appear at the Harare Magistrates Courts where an interpreter will be readily available.
Allegations against the 56 arose on October 21 when they sneaked into Zimbabwe before hiking from Nyamapanda Border Post.
They were dropped in Kondo Village under Chief Seke on the same day.
Prosecutor Ms Pauline Chamunorwa said the following day at around 8:30am, Kondo villagers spotted the group and alerted the police who rounded them up.
They failed to produce documents for their entry and stay in the country.
