Addis Ababa:- Police arrested Elias Gebru, editor-in-chief of an independent weekly magazine, ‘Enqu’ on May 26 in the Capital Addis Ababa. Journalist Elias has accused for publishing an opinion piece he received from a contributor writer.
Elias has appeared to a first instance court on May 27, but the judge denied bail and allowed police additional seven days for extra investigation. Elias is a senior journalist who worked at Fiteh and Awramba Times newspapers, both shut down by the regime, before he joined ‘Enqu’ magazine.
Elias Gebru detention is the 10th journalist detention in a month period of time since April 26, as 6 bloggers and 3 other journalists kept in a notorious Maekelawi prison without charge for a month. Besides in this one month time, two editors-in-chief of local magazines have fled the country. Currently, a total of 19 journalists are suffering in Ethiopian jail.
